The winefront reviewed our wines

  • Interestingly, this wine is from Cowra (organic vineyard) and not the Hunter Valley, though is made from shiraz as usual. The thread of Harkham rosé is the wine is usually very good, somewhat more savoury, this more primary fruited than usual is all. And good for it.

No sulphur used in production here.

Bright as can be. Glass shard crunch and crispness, razor cut edges of tang and zing, all blood orange and pink grapefruit juice with flickers of briny minerality and faint cardamom spice. It’s a little edgy but in the best sense as it delivers huge freshness and refreshment factor, though there is a sense of juiciness in tow too. Fragrant too. It’s wickedly drinkable and such a good time.

Perhaps missing some of the savoury nuance and complexity of past releases, but does deliver a fuller profile or pink wine with more going on than most, and so well.

  • No longer ‘Aziza’s’ now simply ‘Aziza’ and the tribute to a beautiful grandparent continues. Harkham wines, crafted by Richie Harkham and, of course to keep it (certified) Kosher, a Rabbi winemaker, are in their own realm for uniqueness from the Hunter, and do so with aplomb. Eschewing some of the Hunter’s more traditional winemaking approaches, these wines hum with originality. Zero sulphur here and no additions alongside.

This is bloody delicious. Outside the box, all hazelnut, preserved lemon, sea spray, saline minerality, dried apple, faint ginger, cinnamon, quince paste and gentle lime. It is somewhat expansive and soft in the palate but that core of brine and the fringe of talc-like pucker is sensational amongst the fleshier chardonnay characters. The nutty riffs are strong here, the uplifting zestiness of bright fruit to task, but yes, supple and soft and rich in a way too. A nod in the direction of Jura or perhaps Cossard or Vallette of Burgundy. Utterly delicious.

  • Harkham wines are typically iconoclastic in the best sense. Reimagined Hunter Valley wines that march to their own beat, and excite for such. And geez, they have come in leaps and bounds to a high water mark in their own way. This shiraz is certified Kosher, and preservative free. A label tweak has occurred.

It’s meaty and kind of rich but also feels ultra pure, savoury, laced with game meat and dried herbs, garrigue almost, caraway seed woody bitterness, with pepper and blood orange acidity lifting the wine well. Lots of rich, but tart cherry fruitiness in all that too. Slips along the palate in its medium weight way, finds a sheath of quality, crushed rock tannin and extends beautifully then lingers with spice and moreish, mouth-watering amaro like acidity and freshness. A semblance of great au naturale wines of Rhone, but does so in its own stride. How wonderful.
